Environmental Leadership
Welcome to the Environmental Programs and Sustainability landing page! Since the adoption of our Sustainability Action Plan in 2024, the Town of Apex has advanced its commitment to sustainability and environmental leadership. Guided by our FY 2022-23 Strategic Plan, Game Plan Apex, our efforts focus on tracking and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, expanding renewable energy usage, and mitigating environmental impacts of daily activities, like driving or waste disposal. Our Sustainability Action Plan outlines specific strategies for departments to achieve these goals and position Apex as a leader in its commitment to sustainability.

Our Path to a Clean Energy Future
“Clean” or “renewable” energy—such as solar and wind—is continuously replenished by nature and produces no harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Transitioning to clean energy reduces our carbon footprint, strengthens community resilience, and supports a healthier environment for generations to come.
To establish Apex as a regional leader in clean energy, the Town Council and Staff committed to advancing renewable energy access and policies that make clean power easier and more affordable for everyone.
SolSmart Gold Designation
In 2019, Apex earned a national SolSmart Gold designation for removing barriers and streamlining processes that support local solar energy deployment.
Solar Panel Implementation
Apex is powering up with Solar!
- Since 2018, the Town has installed solar panels on ten (10) town facilities.
- In 2024, a Solar Feasibility Report identified eleven (11) more sites ideal for solar installation in the next three (3) years.
- All clean energy generated from solar goes straight into the Town's electrical grid, helping power our community sustainably.
Strategic Energy Planning
Town staff are currently working to establish plans and policies across several areas including energy efficiency, facilities and Town fleet management, and more!
These initiatives will address energy efficiency and further the Town's goals of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions.
LED Streetlight Replacement
In 2018, the Apex Town Council approved an amendment that would transition Town streetlights to light-emitting diode (LED) light fixtures. Learn more about streetlight conversion here.
