Art in Children's Literature - Grades K-2

ART IN CHILDREN’S LITERATURE ~ GRADES K-2

Ages: 5-8 yrs.

This program offers the opportunity to learn about 3 famous authors and create projects based upon the books’ themes. We’ll read, discuss themes, and have fun making art together! Please dress to create. Supplies are included.

“A Bad Case of Stripes” by David Shannon 
This book promotes self-confidence and self-expression. It’s okay to be different, to be yourself. Kids will create images of themselves with bad cases of stripes, a self-portrait with colored vellum overlay. A wacky project with a positive message about self-esteem.

A Bad Case....

“Tar Beach” by Faith Ringgold
In celebration of Black History Month, we’ll read this award-winning story about a girl who lives in New York City and spends her time lying on her rooftop at night, star-gazing and dreaming of flying. We’ll create images of ourselves flying above imaginary worlds, framed by homemade quilt squares in the style of this beautiful book about freedom, family values, and the power of our dreams.

“Camille and the Sunflowers” by Laurence Anholt
A gift of beautiful sunflowers to a town traveler - the artist Vincent van Gogh - become the subject of a magnificent painting. Your child will learn about the artist, and create a beautiful sunflower project, perfect for Mother’s Day gifting.
